Building a Custom GPT

A Custom GPT is a saved, reusable version of ChatGPT that already knows its job. Configure it once — role, instructions, reference files — then you (or your whole team) just talk to it. It's the difference between rewriting the brief every morning and hiring someone who already knows the drill.

Custom GPTs live inside ChatGPT and require a paid ChatGPT plan to build. Anyone can use one you share, depending on your sharing settings.

Why build one

You've probably found a prompt that works really well. The problem: it lives in your head, you paste it in every time, and nobody else benefits. A Custom GPT solves three things at once:

  • Consistency — the same instructions run every time, so quality doesn't depend on who's typing.
  • Reusability — build once, use forever. No more hunting for "that prompt."
  • Shareability — hand it to a teammate and they get your expertise baked in.

Good candidates are the repeatable jobs: a testimonial writer, a proposal drafter, a meeting-notes summarizer, a brand-voice social post generator. If you type a similar prompt more than once a week, that's a Custom GPT waiting to happen.

What it's made of

  • Name & description — what it's called and does.
  • Instructions — the system prompt: role, rules, process, output format. 90% of the quality comes from here.
  • Knowledge (optional) — reference files it can pull from.
  • Conversation starters (optional) — example prompts shown as buttons.
  • Capabilities (optional) — web browsing, image generation, code.
